Alta Badia (Dolomites)

86%Great fit

Dolomites scenery and charm, World Cup black run, huge linked area

✓ Family~ Snow✓ Range✓ Magic✓ No party✓ Budget

Snow: High Village ~1,500 m · top ~2,780 m · no glacier · snowmaking: 80–90% of runs

Why it fits

  • Pila-level range plus the 'magic' — and the Gran Risa, a men's World Cup giant slalom run
  • Snowmaking on 80–90% of runs — the Dolomites are famous for great pistes even in lean years
  • Kids born 2019+ ski free — likely both younger two

Watch out for

  • Longest drive of the Austrian/Italian options — two full days
  • No glacier; fresh natural snow less certain than at the very high resorts
2

Lech-Zürs

86%Good fit

Ticks every box on the brief — except the budget

✓ Family✓ Snow✓ Range✓ Magic✓ No party✗ Budget

Snow: High Village 1,450 m · top 2,811 m · no glacier · snowmaking: Over 80% of pistes

Why it fits

  • Famously snowy, with 80%+ snowmaking, linked to the whole Arlberg — serious blacks and off-piste
  • Quieter and more family-focused than neighbouring St Anton
  • The only option that ticks all four: family, snow, range and magic

Watch out for

  • Among the most expensive resorts in the Alps — £8,000 at Christmas will be very tight
3

Cervinia

79%Good fit

High Italian village under the Matterhorn, linked to Zermatt

✓ Family✓ Snow~ Range✗ Magic✓ No party✓ Budget

Snow: Very high Village 2,050 m · top 3,480 m (3,883 m via Zermatt) · glacier · snowmaking: 60% of local pistes

Why it fits

  • Very high chance of snow: one of the highest villages in the Alps, plus glacier
  • Same valley region as Pila — easy drive, great value for Italy
  • Ski across to Zermatt for a day of Swiss blacks

Watch out for

  • Mostly long cruising reds/blues on the Italian side — hard blacks are over in Zermatt
  • Very windy days can shut the top lifts; not a charming village
4

Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis

71%Good fit

Austria's flagship family resort, car-free village, big linked area

✓ Family~ Snow~ Range✓ Magic✓ No party~ Budget

Snow: High Village 1,430 m · top 2,828 m · no glacier · snowmaking: Extensive (% TBC)

Why it fits

  • The closest match to Obergurgl's magic, with far more terrain
  • Official 2026/27 prices out: your family's 6-day passes ≈ €1,272 (youngest free)
  • Lots of family hotels with kids clubs and half board

Watch out for

  • No glacier — relies on altitude and snowmaking if it's a slow start
  • Fewer truly hard blacks than a racer dad might want; very popular at Christmas
5

Madonna di Campiglio

71%Good fit

Elegant Dolomites town, floodlit World Cup slalom slope

✓ Family~ Snow~ Range✓ Magic✓ No party~ Budget

Snow: High Village 1,550 m · top ~2,500 m · no glacier · snowmaking: Near-complete (per skiresort.info)

Why it fits

  • Night skiing on the Canalone Miramonti, home of the 3-Tre World Cup slalom (usually early Jan)
  • Christmas-card town with a real Italian feel

Watch out for

  • Longest drive on the list
  • Online day passes may be capped 28 Dec – 5 Jan — buy early
6

Tignes

71%Good fit

High village, glacier, huge Espace Killy area — and Mark Warner childcare

✓ Family✓ Snow✓ Range✗ Magic~ No party~ Budget

Snow: Very high Village 2,100 m · top 3,456 m · glacier · snowmaking: TBC

Why it fits

  • Very high chance of snow: village at 2,100 m and the Grande Motte glacier
  • Huge range with serious blacks across in Val d'Isère (Face de Bellevarde)
  • Mark Warner runs Christmas holidays here with kids clubs — the 'fully inclusive' brief
  • Under-8s skied free last season — would cover both younger two

Watch out for

  • Purpose-built — lots of snow, not much chocolate-box 'magic'
  • Val d'Isère next door has a big après scene — stay in Tignes (Le Lac or Les Brévières) and you won't notice it

Drive vs fly — rough cost to Austria (e.g. Serfaus)

Travel only, for 5 people, return. Driving figures use the real route distance; the rest are estimates to check against live quotes.

Rough total≈ £900–1,300≈ £1,800–3,050

Driving saves roughly £900–1,750 and solves the gear problem, at the cost of two long travel days each way. Italy adds Brenner motorway tolls; France adds French tolls (~€85–100 each way to the northern Alps).

Ways to book

Checked 30 Oct 2026. Many resorts haven't published 2026/27 prices yet — anything marked TBC or 2025/26 needs checking. Drive times are motorway driving only (OpenStreetMap routing from the Calais terminal); add breaks. Altitudes and piste lengths are approximate.

🎄 Merry Christmas — here's to fresh snow and magical days on the mountain ⛷️
